What is GCB? Why GCB is necessary?
The Government Configuration Baseline (GCB), built upon Microsoft’s group policy object (GPO), aims to regulate the uniform security settings (e.g., password length and password change time) of information and communication technology (ICT) equipment (e.g., personal computers (PC), server hosts, and network communication equipment) to lower the risk of cyberattacks and thereby ease the worries about resulting information security incidents.
Although MIS personnel can independently implement GPO/GCB through Windows’ activity directory (AD), the following drawbacks are evident:
- Difficulty in debugging when real-time reports are unavailable after mass background policy application.
- Laborious and inefficient management when it needs to redo everything again for each time of GCB update.
- Labor- and time-consuming manual data processing in lack of intuitive report-based statistics.
